Learn about Stone Veneer Siding

Stone Veneer Siding

Stone veneer siding is a manufactured siding product that is made to look like stone but is cheaper and easier to install. Stone veneer siding is made by pouring a cement mixture or clay into stone-shaped molds.

Stone veneer siding is a beautiful and durable option but is prone to water leaks and costly moisture damage if installed improperly. The most common problem is around windows, where installers place mortar right up against the window instead of placing kick-out flashings, backer rods, and sealant joints. The bottom edge of the siding should stop six inches above the ground to allow moisture to drain out naturally. Find an experienced professional who follows industry standards.

By being a lower cost and lower weight than natural stone, manufactured stone veneer can be installed on walls with less need for structural support. The material can be of low embodied energy, but can be difficult to recycle at the end of its life.

Stone siding made of marble was used on the Roman Coliseum. The siding has since disappeared, but the holes for the hooks that held it in place are still visible.
