Learn about Parallel Chord Roof Truss

Parallel Chord Roof Truss

Parallel chord trusses with diagonal bracing are typically used as floor joists but can also be used as rafters in sloped roofs.

Parallel chord trusses can be made with materials with varying levels of resistance to water damage and levels of thermal conductivity. Metal framing member and metal truss plates can be avoided by using solid wood and glued joints. Make sure that the trusses are engineered for the specific application.

Parallel chord roof trusses can be much deeper than standard lumber (16 inches or more), allowing for additional roof insulation. As well, since they are not one solid wood member, they result in reduced thermal bridging. This system can be improved further by adding a layer of rigid insulation on the roof deck.
