Water heater performance is rated by an energy factor (EF); the higher the better. Conventional electric storage water tanks do not meet Energy Star standards but hybrid tanks are available that have both a heat pump and an electric element as back up.

To meet Energy Star standards a minumum EF of 2 is required for tanks less than 55 gallons and an EF of 2.2 is required for tanks over 55 gallons.
